According to the info provided in Bleach manga and Anime, at the start of the story Ichigo Kurosaki was a 15 year old boy who was in the 1st year of his high school although he looks like he is in his 20's (Actually there is nothing about his looks in the manga or anime). Despite his looks he tends to behave like a child sometimes which is actually the essence of a Shounen hero. But to tell you the truth, Ichigo is much more mature than most other shounen heroes.
At the first Episode of Bleach we see that Ichigo has a special power to see spirits which in other words are actually ghosts. Why he got this power you may find that later but before any more discussion Check out our youtube channel for Anime and Gaming.

On the first episode of bleach Ichigo meats a Soul Reaper or shinigami from the soul society named Rukia Kuchki. She was appointed as the Death God over the area where Ichigo lives. As a Soul Reaper her duty is to guide innocent souls to the Soul Society and send the wicked souls to the underground. The Wicked or corrupted souls turn into hollow which are like some kind of spiritual monsters. Rukia got injured fighting one of them (Some Death God she is!). But if the monster isn't stopped then Ichigos whole family will be in danger!
So to save them Rukia temporarily transfers her Shinigami powers to him by stabbing to his chest!?
When Ichigo transformed into a Soul Reaper he was carrying a big fat sword. The sword of a Shinigami is actually the manifestation of their soul. So the size of the sword actually shows their spiritual energy. And compared to rukia's tiny thin sword ichigo's big fat sword seems to reflect a lot more spiritual energy despite him originally being an ordinary high school student!
Well that incident was resolved instantly after Ichigo became a Shinigami.
But for some reason he still contained that power afterwards. Eventhough Rukia only let him borrow her power temporarily he seemed to be getting stronger and stronger as a Soul Reaper. It became obvious after Ichigo was able to force a Menos Grande back to the wakomundo with his spiritual energy.
But even with his increasing powers, Ichigo was unable to stop Byakuya Kuchiki and Renji Abarai from taking Rukia back to the soul society for judgement.
Although he put up a good fight against leftenant Abarai but was almost killed by Byakuya.
Kiske Urahara brought him back from brink of death.
Then Ichigo sought his help to save Rukia. So urahara gave him a special kind of training to get his Spiritual Energy back. But he still didn't have his Reaper power. Ichigo again ha to experience a near death situation in order to get his Shinigami powers back. He was almost turned into a hollow on the process but managed to break free with his will power.
So now he is a Soul Reaper again.
But there was a tiny bit problem.
His Reaper Sword was cut from his fight with Byakuya Kuchiki.
So Kiske Urahara started yet another harsh training to regain the blade of his Zanpakto. Ichigo was finally able to manifest the sword yet again but now in completely different form and even bigger than before!
Ichigo's resolve to save Rukia from the Soul society made him train relentlessly before he went to the Soul Society.
And then, when he seemed to be ready Ichigo Kurasaki, Along with his friends Orihime Inoue, Yasutora Sado and the Quincy Uryū Ishida, went to the Soul Society together to save their friend Rukia.
