Death Note Behind The Scene - A Brief Technical Review (2003 - 2017)

In the World of anime and manga Death Note seems to be quite an influential anime among the fan base. Often we see its live action adaptation. There seems to be quite a few adaptations of this franchise due to its popularity. Even the esteemed streaming site Netflix wanted a piece of that cake and made a fool out of themselves! But that’s a completely different story.

Death note: Desu Noto is a manga written by Tsugumi Ohba and illustrated by Takesgi Obata.
Its My Anime List (MAL) rating is 8.77 rated by 175,857 and favourited by 22,673 members as of today. it has only 12 volumes and 108 chapters. It's manga was first published in December 1 2003 and was finished in may 15 2006. It was serialized weekly by none other than the famous Shonen Jump.

The Death Note manga got a 37 episode anime adaptation named Death Note(DN) by studio Madhouse. D.N Dream Partners, Nippon Television Network (NTV), Shueisha and VideoAudio Project (VAP) was also in the production company. Viz Media was its licensor.

DN anime has a MAL rating of 8.69 rated by 1,264,853 members and has been favourated by 80,760 MAL members till now. In IMDB Death Note has a rating of 9.0 rated by 144,768 users!

The Series aired from October 4 2006 to June 27 2007. Just as the series ended, on August 31 2007 a summary of the first arc of the anime series was aired. Its name was Death Note Rewrite or in English Death Note: Relight. The first episode was called Genshisuru Kami or Visions of a God.
The 2nd episode was aired on 22 August 2008 which was called Lo Tsugu Mono or L’s Successors.
The Director Tetsuro Araki who is also the director of Death Note anime TV Series.
These special episodes has a 7.82 MAL rating scored by 48,457 users at the time of writing this article. 492 people made it into their favorite.
The 1st Episode Visions of a God has score of 7.8 by 491 users in IMDB.
The 2nd episode L’s Successor has a score of 7.6 in IMDB by 369 users.


I've only seen the anime so I can say it's pretty good. We can just assume that the manga was on the same level considering it’s the source material and the high rating and popularity in MAL.
There have been many live action adaptations of Death Note up until this day.

In 2006 there was a live action movie adaptation of Death Note. The adaptation has two parts. The first part "Death Note" was released in 17 June 2006 in Japan which has a IMDB RATING of 7.9 rated by 24,913 users.
Nippon Television Network (NTV), Shueisha and Warner Bros was affiliated with its production.

The movie has a total length of 2 hours and 6 minutes.
It had an estimated budget of $20,000,000.
Opening Weekend of Hong Kong had an estimated income of $627,378.

The 2nd part of the movie named "Death Note: The Last name" was released in 3rd November of the same year. It has an IMDB rating of 7.3 by 13,260 users which is much lower compared to the first part of the movie. It was 2 hours and 21 minutes in length. 
Like the first part this movie also had an estimated budget of $20,000,000.
Gross income outside USA was $39,600,000 and in Japan the income was ¥5,200,000,000.

The Director was again Shusuke Kaneko.

In 2008 a Spin-Out sequel came out Named – Death Note: L Change the World. In this movie the story focuses on the character “L”.
It was released in USA in 2009.
The film was directed by Hideo Nakata and produced by 8 different producers and co-producers.

That’s very low compared to the previous two movies and as a stand-alone movie as well.
It had an estimated budget of $10,000,000.
Outside USA and Japan it had a gross income of $4,900,000.
Gross inside Japan to 24 February 2008 was $28,719,534 and to 9 March 2008 was $18,661,058.

In 2015 a DeathNote TV Series was released. The series has a rating of 7.4 scored by 793 users is IMDB. It’s 3,307th in the IMDB popularity ranking at the moment.
It has 11 episodes and the episodes running time is from 55 – 85 minutes.
In Japan its release date was 5 July 2015. The production company is Nippon Television Network (NTV).

In 2016 a sequel of the 2015 Death Note series came out named DeathNote: New Generation directed by Shinske Sato.
It was made to be the sequel of the 2006 movie Death Note 2: The Last Name and a prequel to the 2016 film Death Note: Light Up the New World.
The mini TV series had only 3 episodes and each episodes was only 20 minutes of length. This time the production company was Hulu.
In Japan it was released on 16 September 2016.
It has a MAL rating of 6.5 scored by 100 users.

In the Year 2016 another Death Note Movie came out. But this time it’s from Hollywood. Clutch Films produced the movie and Ansyl Carpenter was the writer, director and the producer for this movie. Courtney Dietz was the associated producer. Ansyl was also the Cinematographer.
It came out 8 April 2016 in USA. The movie had a length of 12 minutes and only an estimated budget of $1000. So as you can see it can be considered as a pilot project. So it’s natural that the movie (or pilot) has a score of 7.4 by only 8 users in IMDB!

The Year 2016 seems to be the year of Death Note.
Because Japan released a sequel of the movie Death Note 2: The Last Name. The story of this movie named Death Note: Light Up the New World take place after the Death Note: New Generation mini TV series.
The Movie was directed by Shinuske Sato and produced by Takahiro Sato.
It has a length of 2 hours and 15 minutes and was first aired in Japan on 29 October 2016.
The Movie’s IMDB score is 5.9 rated by 1,469 users.

Finally in 2017 the disaster came forth.
Netflix released their version of Death Note Movie.
Let’s not talk about how it was made or how good it was, instead let’s see what the viewer’s think.
Netflix’s version of Death Note has an IMDB rating of 4.9 scored by 47,578 users. That’s by far the lowest IMDB score for any Death Note Adaptation.
If that wasn’t enough for you then let’s see the Rotten Tomatoes score for this Netflix Film.
In Rotten Tomatoes, Death Note got an average rating of 4.6/10 in the sites Tomato meter by the critics. 40% of the critics have given the movie a positive review than the average score.
But as for the normal users, they were a bit merciless. The average audience score is 2.1/5 and only 24% gave it a score of 3.5 or higher.

This Death Note of Netflix was released in 25th august 2017 in USA.
The main production companies are Lin Pictures and Vertigo Entertainment.
It was directed by Adam Wingard.
